April is National Grilled Cheese month!
Have you been dying to know how the grilled cheese sandwich came to be? Of course you have! 😉 Apparently, cooked bread and cheese as a combination has been around as long as bread and cheese have been around…which is a long time! The grilled cheese sandwich in a form closer to what we know today came to be more popular in the 1920’s with the advent of sliced bread. It started out as an open-faced creation using grated cheese, but by the 1960’s the evolution of the grilled cheese sandwich took another step forward when stores started stocking individually wrapped American cheese slices. It was at that time that the addition of a top slice became popular. Today there are many different permutations of the modern grilled cheese sandwich, as illustrated below in some of the varieties I found while poking around the internet!
The first two might look a little familiar….they are from posts written by ME! 🙂
