I made this Sausage and Bell Pepper Stew a few nights ago. I was really in the mood for a glass of wine, and this recipe calls for 1/2 cup of it, so making it gave me the perfect excuse to open a bottle. I had such a nice time slicing the peppers and browning the sausage, while sipping a glass of wine, humming along to the radio, and frequently glancing happily at my brand new kitchen wall clock!
I am so happy to finally have a kitchen wall clock that I really like. About a year ago, we remodeled our kitchen to create a more efficient layout and provide a lot more storage space. I love it, and it has helped me in my resolve to cook healthier meals for my family on a regular basis.
There are still a few loose ends left that we keep saying we will address, but of course they are low on the priority list. Up until a couple of days ago, the kitchen clock was one of them. We were still using the clock we had in the old kitchen, which was too small and didn’t mesh well with the new paint color.
On the left is a picture of Old Clock in the new kitchen. It actually looked worse than it appears here, but this is the most representative picture I could find. I wanted to take a better picture, but Old Clock met its end a couple of weeks ago and now is no longer with us! (Pause for a moment of silence.) It was a freak accident (I swear!). One afternoon I entered the house through the kitchen, and as the door from the garage area closed behind me, Old Clock fell off the wall, hit the floor, and smashed into smithereens! Old Clock had served us well for many years, but I took that as a sure sign that it was time to move on and find something better suited for that space. And I vowed that this time, I was going to find something really cool!
I went to a couple of stores to look at clocks, but couldn’t really find anything that I loved. So I logged on to Amazon.com and did more searching there. And finally found this clock! I ordered it, and it arrived a few days ago. Hooray!
I really like New Clock a lot! What do you think?

Now, on to the recipe at hand! My version is adapted from this Sausage and Bean Stew recipe I saw on Cozi.com. I dialed back the beans a tad (Thing 2 is not a huge fan of beans), added more bell pepper, substituted chicken Italian sausage, and made a few other tweaks. The result is a healthy, filling, tummy-warming dish that almost the whole family loved! Thing 2, who as I mentioned does not love beans, nor does he care for tomatoes, gave this dish a rating of 3 biscuits out of 5 (he does love biscuits!)
Sausage and Bell Pepper StewPrint Recipe
- 1 pound chicken Italian sausage (I use sweet, but you can substitute hot if desired)
- 1/4 cup water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 3 bell peppers (mixed colors make it pretty, but are not crucial)
- 1 medium yellow onion (chopped)
- 2 garlic cloves (minced)
- 1 15 ounce can red kidney beans (rinsed)
- 1 14.5 ounce can diced tomatoes
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin
- 1/2 cup dry red wine
- salt and pepper (if desired)
- Brown the sausage over medium heat. Once it is browned, cut it into small pieces, add the water to the skillet, and cover and cook until done.
- While the sausage is cooking, seed and slice the peppers into strips. Cut the strips in half.
- Set aside the sausage, keeping any water and drippings in the skillet from the sausage cooking.
- Add the olive oil and warm over medium heat. Add the pepper strips and onion and cook until tender (about 6-8 minutes). Add the garlic and cook for another minute or two.
- Add the sausage, beans, tomatoes (and their juice), cumin, and wine to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes, then reduce heat to low and cook for 15 minutes.
- Add salt and pepper to taste, if desired.
Note that you can make this even easier and quicker by using pre-cooked sausage and pre-cut bell peppers. As usual, I bought my onion already chopped because that is one task I just can’t stand. 🙂
