This mouthwatering Mushroom Swiss Burger is topped with melted cheese and sautéed mushrooms for a savory delight that satisfies with its earthy flavors.
Preheat your large skillet over medium heat for about 5 minutes (must be very hot to sear the burgers).
As the skillet is heating up, combine the ground beef, steak seasoning, and Worcestershire sauce and form them into patties. The patties should be slightly larger than the buns since they shrink as they cook.
When the skillet is hot enough, add half of the butter (prevents sticking), then add the patties and cook for 2-3 minutes on each side.
2 tablespoons butter, divided
While the burgers are cooking, in a separate pan, sauté the sliced mushrooms and onions in the remaining butter (with some salt and pepper if desired) until they become tender and caramelized.
8 ounces sliced mushrooms, 1 cup sweet yellow onion, sliced or diced, salt and black pepper
Once the burgers are cooked to your preferred level of doneness, place 2 slices of Swiss cheese on top of each patty and cover the skillet with a lid to let the cheese melt.
4 slices Swiss cheese
Assemble the homemade burgers by placing the beef patties on the hamburger buns and top them with the sautéed mushrooms and onions.
2 hamburger buns
Serve immediately.
Notes
You can substitute beef with ground pork, ground turkey, or chicken if you prefer leaner meats.
Steak seasoning can be substituted with salt and pepper to taste as well as a teaspoon each of garlic powder and onion powder. Or you can use burger seasoning.
Swiss cheese really pairs well with mushrooms, however you can substitute provolone, gouda cheese, or your favorite cheese
Use brioche buns for this beef burger or substitute your favorite type of bun.
White mushrooms work well but you can also use baby bella, golden mushrooms, or another type.
Substitute soy sauce for the Worcestershire sauce if desired.
Use white onion, red onion, or shallots instead of the sweet yellow onion if desired.
