🧂 Ingredients Needed
- white chocolate - I prefer to use melting wafers, as they're specifically meant to melt down well. You could also use white chocolate chips in a pinch.
- green food coloring - this gives your Grinch hot chocolate bombs that classic green color.
- hot cocoa mix - feel free to use your favorite brand of packaged hot cocoa mix to make prep super easy.
- mini marshmallows - these are optional, but the best cups of cocoa have marshmallows floating on top!
- red heart candy - this represents the Grinch's heart, which grew three sizes once he finally embraced the holiday cheer!
🔪 Instructions
- Heat the white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl as instructed on the package, then add the food dye and stir until smooth.
- Add about a tablespoon of chocolate into each space in a spherical silicon mold. Spread the chocolate up the sides of the mold, then repeat this step as necessary until the shells are thick enough.
- Allow the chocolate shells to harden for about 10 minutes in the fridge.
- Remove the chocolate spheres from the fridge and add hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows. Take an unfilled half and melt the edges slightly on a hot plate, then gently press over top of the filled halves.
- Drizzle with additional melted chocolate and place a red candy heart on top of each cocoa bomb.
- Place the green hot chocolate bombs into mugs and top with steaming milk to melt the chocolate and make a delicious beverage!
❔ FAQs
This can happen if you use regular white chocolate chips, as the cocoa butter might crystallize unevenly when hardening. Using candy melts almost guarantees a pretty and shiny finish.
I recommend chocolate that is higher in quality, like Ghirardelli chocolate. If you use an option on the cheaper end, it may have a less appealing flavor or presentation.
Simple - just pop it in a mug and pour warm milk over top! You'll need anywhere from 6 oz to a cup of hot milk. The heat will melt the chocolate, freeing the marshmallows and cocoa mix, and then you can stir it all up to make a tasty chocolate drink.
💭 Expert Tips and Tricks
- Work quickly once you've melted the edges of the chocolate shells.
- Handle your cocoa bombs delicately. Even if you've made the shells nice and thick, they're still a bit fragile.
- Use a piping bag for the chocolate drizzle if you want a more precise look.
- Make sure you give the chocolate shells ample time to harden as well, or you'll have a hard time putting them together.
- Don't overfill the bottom halves of your cocoa bombs, as tempting as it is! You may end up making a mess, or just having leftover hot cocoa powder in the bottom of your drink.
- All you need to do to melt the edges of the bombs is place a small plate in the microwave for 10 seconds or so.
- Place the cocoa bombs in cupcake liners for a fun presentation with a little extra flair.
📌 These adorable green hot chocolate bombs are the perfect way to bring a fun and festive flair to any ordinary mug of cocoa!
💡 Substitutions and Variations
- Once you drizzle the chocolate over top, you could also add festive holiday sprinkles for some more pops of color, or a red heart sprinkle mix instead of the candy heart.
- You may also be able to find green chocolate melts and skip the food coloring altogether.
- Another option is to set some chocolate aside and dye it red for some contrast with the drizzle.
- Add a flavored extract to the chocolate to give your hot cocoa a unique twist! Peppermint extract and hazelnut extract would both be delicious.
- For some additional flavor, add crushed candy canes or milk chocolate chips to the cocoa mix.
🥫 Storage and Reheating
Keep your Grinch hot chocolate bombs in an airtight container, somewhere cool and dry. You could keep them in the fridge, but it's not necessary as long as they're not in a place where the chocolate will melt! If stored properly, they can last a couple of weeks at room temperature.

Grinch Hot Cocoa Bombs
Equipment
Ingredients
- 10 ounces white chocolate melting wafers
- green food coloring (approximately 20 drops)
- 16 tablespoons hot cocoa mix
- 24 mini marshmallows
- chocolate red heart candy
Instructions
- In a microwave-safe container, melt the chocolate wafers as instructed on the package and stir until smooth.10 ounces white chocolate melting wafers
- Add 15-20 drops of green food coloring to the melted chocolate, 5-6 drops at a time. Stir to incorporate the dye.green food coloring
- Place the silicone mold on a baking sheet or cutting board. Spoon 1 tablespoon of melted chocolate into each well of the mold. Using the back of a spoon, spread the chocolate up the sides of each well, creating a complete layer that covers the entire mold.
- As the edge starts to harden, spread some more chocolate to thicken the edge. Pour out any excess chocolate that pools on the bottom of the mold. Move the mold to the refrigerator and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes.
- Remove the mold from the refrigerator and carefully flip it over so that the rounded side is facing up. Gently press the center of each well and peel the silicone mold away from the hardened chocolate shell. Be cautious not to apply too much pressure to avoid cracking the shell.
- Warm a plate, then place one half of the chocolate shell, rounded side up, on the heated surface. Allow the edge of the shell to melt slightly until it creates a smooth and even edge that can be used to seal the bomb.
- Working quickly, take this half of the chocolate bomb and position it on a cookie sheet with the rounded side down. Fill it with 2 tablespoons of hot chocolate mix and 6-8 mini marshmallows.16 tablespoons hot cocoa mix, 24 mini marshmallows
- Place the other half of the chocolate bomb on the heated plate. Remove it when the edge melts a bit, and carefully position it on top of the filled shell. The melted edges of the chocolate will meet and serve as a "glue" to secure the two halves together.
- For decoration, drizzle melted chocolate over the top of the bomb and apply the red heart offset from the top center.chocolate red heart candy
Notes
- Store the hot cocoa bombs in a cool place until ready to use.
- For serving, place the bomb at the bottom of a mug, then pour 6 ounces of hot milk over the bomb slowly to watch it melt and develop into a silky rich hot cocoa.
- For the best results, choose a good quality brand of melting wafers, like Ghirardelli.
