❔ FAQs
This cut of meat is usually comprised of top round or top sirloin. It gets its name from the indentations left behind in the process of flattening and tenderizing it. It's also sometimes called cubed steak or minute steak and is known for its low price point paired with a flavorful and tender finish.
Cube steak comes pre-tenderized, so it's difficult to dry it out and make it tough while cooking. With the slow cooking process, the low heat over a long time is perfect for preserving the tender texture of this particular cut of beef. If you find your steak turns out a bit tough, try adding a little bit of water to the mixture during the initial cooking.
There's no need to rinse or clean your steak before cooking it. As long as you cook it to the minimum internal temperature, it will be perfectly safe to eat!
💭 Expert Tips and Tricks
- This can also be cooked on high for 3 to 4 hours if you have a shorter time between prep and serving.
- For some extra flavor, sear the steak in a hot pan with some olive oil before adding to the slow cooker.
- If you're worried about your steak being tough, you can tenderize it more yourself before cooking. Tenderizing is the process of breaking down the fibers of meat, which makes it easier to cook and eat.
- You can use a rolling pin or other heavy kitchen tool if you don't have a meat tenderizer or meat mallet.
- Serve with mashed potatoes, egg noodles, white rice, or your favorite crusty bread.
📌 This delicious crock pot minute steak is the perfect option for a hearty dinner any night of the week! You'll love the tender cube steak paired with rich, savory gravy.
💡 Substitutions and Variations
- For an even deeper flavor, use beef broth or another kind of broth instead of water.
- Add some fresh parsley or green onions over top for a bit of color and fresh flavor.
- Cream of chicken soup can be used as a substitute for the cream of mushroom.
- Feel free to add even more seasonings if you like. Salt and black pepper are a good place to start, but you could also include onion powder, red pepper flakes, garlic powder, or paprika.
- If you can't find cube steak, feel free to use something like round steak or any kind of top sirloin. If it's not already tenderized, I recommend tenderizing it yourself before cooking.
🥫 Storage and Reheating
Keep leftover steak and gravy in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Reheat in the microwave, in a pot over medium heat on the stove top, or in the oven at 350 degrees F, or even transfer back to the slow cooker and heat on low.
This slow cooker cubed steak is also great to make ahead of time and freeze in a large freezer bag. Thaw in the fridge overnight, then add to the slow cooker and cook until heated through.
