Gather Batter Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the eggs, cream, and Kahlua.

Whisk
Mix the batter ingredients until they're well combined.

Dip Bread
Dip each piece of bread into the batter and allow any excess to drip off, then add to a skillet over medium high heat.

Finish Cooking
Cook each slice of bread for 3 to 4 minutes on each side.
💡 Expert Tips and Tricks
- Let your bread sit out for a bit before cooking. Slightly stale bread is great for soaking up all of the batter without getting overly soggy!
- A non-stick skillet or a well-seasoned cast iron pan are great options for really good French Toast.
- Avoid adding the bread to the pan before it's hot enough. Flick a couple of water droplets into the pan and check to see if they sizzle and evaporate to ensure it's fully preheated.
- If you know you'll be making a large batch, prep a plate lined with paper towels to hold the finished slices while the rest cook.
- You can also keep French Toast slices on a baking sheet covered with foil at a low temperature in the oven to keep them warm while the rest cook!
❔ FAQs
This really comes down to preference! Both are great options, but brioche will be a bit softer and sourdough will have a little bit more bite to it.
Other coffee liqueurs like Tia Maria or Mr. Black Cold Brew Coffee liqueur are great. Baileys also works, but it may make the dish overly sweet.
Be sure to let your bread get a little stale before you submerge it in your custard batter, and grease the skillet well. You want the French Toast to start cooking the second it hits the surface, so preheat thoroughly.

📝 Substitutions and Variations
- If you don't have Kahlua, you can also use Irish cream, amaretto, or another kind of coffee liqueur.
- Some cinnamon and/or nutmeg make a great addition to the batter for some extra warm flavor.
- For a slightly softer result, use brioche, French bread, or challah instead of the sourdough.
- Substitute coconut cream to make this dish dairy free.
Kristin's Kitchen Tip
Avoid crowding your pan for best results! The bread will cook more evenly if you give it some room to breathe - cooking in batches might be necessary
🥡 Storage and Reheating
Store leftover French Toast slices in an airtight container in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. If you want to freeze them, arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet and pop in the freezer. Once frozen you can transfer to a bag or other container.
Reheat in a toaster oven or pop them back in a skillet over medium heat. You can even reheat French Toast right from frozen in your toaster or oven!

Notes
Prep Tips:
- Let the sourdough bread sit out for a bit before cooking-slightly stale bread works best for soaking up the custard without getting soggy.
- Use a non-stick skillet or well-seasoned cast iron pan for best results.
- To test if the skillet is hot enough, flick a few drops of water onto the surface-if they sizzle and evaporate quickly, it's ready for the French toast.
- Prep a plate lined with paper towels to rest the cooked slices if you're making a large batch.
Variation Suggestions:
- You can substitute Irish cream, amaretto, or your favorite flavored liqueur for the Kahlua.
- Add a dash of cinnamon or nutmeg to the custard for warm spice flavor.
- Use challah, brioche, or French bread instead of sourdough for a softer texture.
- Top with a drizzle of chocolate syrup, maple syrup, or a dusting of powdered sugar.
- Make it dairy-free by using coconut cream or other alternative.
Serving Suggestions:
- Serve warm with a sprinkle of chopped hazelnuts and a side of whipped cream or fresh berries.
- Pair with a cup of coffee or a brunch cocktail like a mimosa or spiked hot chocolate.
- For a fancy presentation, stack the slices and layer with fruit compote or jam.
Storage Info For Leftovers:
- Cool the left over slices in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
- Reheat the slices in a skillet over low heat or in the toaster oven for best results.
- Freeze slices in a single layer on a baking sheet, then transfer to a freezer-safe bag. Reheat from frozen in the toaster or oven.
