❔ FAQs
Absolutely; as long as you cook it until it's fully done, there's no danger in putting raw meat in your slow cooker.
This could be due to overcooking or cooking at too high a temperature. I recommend cooking on low and checking at 6 hours if you have the time. To salvage pork that's a bit dry, be sure not to get rid of the excess liquid in the slow cooker and use that to bring some moisture back to the finished shredded pork.
Yes, a large amount of the flavor of this dish comes from the pork cooking in that barbecue sauce for hours. The meat will become infused with the tasty BBQ flavors, and you can add more after it's done cooking as well!
💭 Expert Tips and Tricks
- Pork is done cooking at an internal temperature of around 145 degrees F. Use a digital thermometer or meat thermometer to check the center of the pork to ensure it's cooked all the way through.
- If you're having trouble shredding your pork, it probably needs to be cooked a bit longer. It should be tender and easy to pull apart.
- Feel free to trim extra fat from your pork before cooking.
- This is a great recipe to make ahead of time and keep in the fridge for the next day! Excellent as a game day afternoon snack or early dinner.
- Cooking time may vary depending on the size of your pork loin, so I recommend starting with 6 hours of cooking (on low) and going from there.
📌 With only 2 simple ingredients, this easy slow cooker pulled pork recipe is ideal for weeknight dinners, barbecues, picnics, cookouts, and more!
💡 Substitutions and Variations
- Feel free to add more seasonings to your pork before cooking. Cayenne, chili powder or red pepper flakes are great to add a kick of heat.
- A store bought BBQ sauce is great for a convenient and easy option, but you can also make your own homemade BBQ sauce if you want to control the flavors more.
- Instead of a pork shoulder roast, you can use pork butt roast (sometimes called a Boston butt) or a pork tenderloin roast.
- Add some brown sugar for a bit of extra sweetness.
🥫 Storage and Reheating
Keep leftover pulled pork in an airtight container or sealed plastic bags in the fridge for 3 to 4 days. You can also freeze 2 ingredient pulled pork for about 3 months.
To reheat, cook in the oven at 225 degrees (the low heat prevents it from drying out). You may want to add some additional BBQ sauce or another liquid like broth to keep the meat tender and moist.
Allow frozen pulled pork to thaw in the fridge before reheating.

This easy pulled pork recipe can be made even better by serving it on buns for pork sandwiches, on top of rice, baked potatoes, pasta, mashed potatoes, and more! Or, pair it with potato salad, this Ramen Noodle Coleslaw, a Chickpea Pasta Salad, or some Air Fryer Frozen French Fries.
